Welcome

Welcome to the the Multiphase and Cardiovascular Flow Lab at the University of Washington.
We are a Fluid Mechanics Laboratory focused on understanding the fundamental physics of Mutlphase Flows and the role of fluids in the human cardiovascular system. We perform experiments, numerical simulations and theoretical analysis to improve understanding of the Fluid Mechanics, as well as to solve fundamental problems in Medicine, Energy, and Environmental Engineering.

Some problems we are working on right now are:
- Hemodynamics in Intracranial Aneurysms, specifically after treatment with endovascular stents and coils.
- Fluid Mechanics of Mechanical Circulatory Support in Cardiology, specifically the understanding and reduction of the risk of thrombosis in Left Ventricular Assist Devices (a pump implanted to support the left ventricle in advanced Heart Failure patients).
- Hemodynamics of Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease, specifically the design and modeling of surgical patches for repair of aortic coarctation.
- The use of Doppler Ultrasound in understanding the Fluid Mechanics of blood flow in the human body, and diagnosing cardiovascular disease, specifically the use of Transcranial Doppler to understand blood flow in the Circle of Willis (a complex manifold that provides redundant flow of blood to the brain) in health and under vasospasm (a very serious condition where one or more of the vessels that bring blood to the brain are suddenly and severely contracted).
- The Dynamics of Inertial Particles in Turbulence, specifically the trajectories and collisions of water microdroplets in clouds, leading to the process of Warm Rain formation.
- Atomization and Sprays. The process of Break-Up of a Liquid Jet by a High-Speed Gas Jet and the distribution of the resultant liquid Droplets in Turbulent Multiphase Flow. Specifically, the Sensing and Control of this process that has many applications in Nature (Sea Spray, Hydrothermal Vents, etc.) and Engineering (liquid Fuel Injection in Gas Turbines, Jet Engines and Rocket Engines, Additive Manufacturing, Spray Cooling, Pharmaceutical Oral Dose Manufacturing, etc.).
